01 / Why Simplr

Built for the way wellness businesses actually earn.

Wellness income is rarely one thing. You might have class income, one-to-one clients, an online programme and a retreat — all in the same tax year. We keep it all clear, correct and organised.

Do wellness professionals pay tax?

If you earn it,
HMRC wants to know.

If your income from training, teaching, coaching or running a studio exceeds £1,000 in a tax year, you need to register as self-employed and file a Self Assessment tax return — regardless of whether it is your only income source.

If your taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in a rolling 12-month period, you must register for VAT. And if your qualifying self-employed income exceeds £50,000, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax will apply from 2026.

04 / FAQs

Wellness tax questions, straight answers.

Quick answers before you book a call.

Do personal trainers and instructors need to file a tax return?
Yes. If your self-employed income from training, teaching or coaching is more than £1,000 in a tax year, you need to register as self-employed and file a Self Assessment return — even if you also have employed income.
What expenses can wellness professionals claim?
Common allowable expenses include CPD and training courses, insurance, equipment, props, studio hire, booking software, subscriptions, marketing, travel to clients, phone and a proportion of home working costs where applicable.
I teach classes and also sell online programmes — how does that work?
All income streams are reported on the same Self Assessment return. We make sure each income source is categorised correctly and that expenses are matched to the right part of your business.
Should I operate as a sole trader or limited company?
Most fitness and wellness professionals start as sole traders. A limited company can become tax-efficient as profit grows, but it brings additional admin. We can help you work out which structure suits your current position.
Do I need to register for VAT?
You must register for VAT if your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in a rolling 12-month period. Some fitness and wellness services may qualify for VAT exemption — we can help you work out what applies to your specific situation.
Can you help if I run a pilates or yoga studio?
Yes. Studio businesses have additional considerations including premises costs, employed or self-employed instructor arrangements, equipment and memberships. We handle the full picture.
