Accountant for eBay Sellers UK — Simplr Accounting

Accountant for
eBay Sellers.

Specialist UK accountants for eBay sellers — from side-hustle flippers to full-time reselling operations.

Whether you run auction listings, a Buy It Now shop, eBay Store subscriptions or cross-border orders through the Global Shipping Programme, we keep your accounts HMRC-compliant, your expenses fully claimed and your Self Assessment filed on time. We understand how eBay income actually works — including the DAC7 data HMRC already sees from your account.

HMRC data sharing

eBay now reports UK seller income data directly to HMRC under DAC7 rules. This means HMRC can already see your sales figures before you file. Your Self Assessment needs to match — and we make sure it does. Read our eBay tax guide or book a call to get your records straight.

01 / Why Simplr

We get how eBay sellers actually earn.

Most accountants see eBay income as simple self-employment. We know it is anything but. Final value fees, promoted listings, postage costs, returns, stock value and cross-border VAT — this is what we work with every day.

HMRC already has your numbers

Since January 2024, eBay is required to report UK seller income data to HMRC automatically. That means HMRC can cross-reference your declared income against what eBay reported before you even file. If your records are not up to date, get in touch — we can help you get straight before any issues arise.

Hobby vs trading — know the difference

When does selling become a business?

Selling personal possessions occasionally is not the same as trading. But once you are buying stock to resell, selling regularly with a view to profit, or earning over £1,000 a year from it, HMRC treats you as self-employed. Read our guide to tax for eBay sellers UK for the full picture.

Second-hand goods and VAT

VAT Margin Scheme

If you buy and resell used goods, you may be eligible for the VAT Margin Scheme — which means you only pay VAT on the profit margin rather than the full selling price. This is particularly relevant for eBay sellers dealing in collectables, electronics or vintage items at scale.

04 / Key thresholds

Know where
you stand.

Whether you are just starting out or running a full-time eBay operation, knowing these thresholds means no surprises from HMRC.

06 / FAQs

eBay tax questions, straight answers.

Everything you need to know before booking a call.

Do eBay sellers pay tax in the UK?
Yes. If you are selling on eBay as a UK resident with the intent to make a profit, your earnings count as taxable income. Once you earn over £1,000 in a tax year, you need to register as self-employed and file a Self Assessment tax return — whether you are selling full-time, flipping as a side hustle, or have simply outgrown the occasional personal sale. Read more in our guide to tax for eBay sellers UK.
What income do I need to declare from eBay?
All of it. That means gross sales from auctions, Buy It Now listings, eBay Shop orders, promoted listings and any international sales. Under DAC7, eBay already reports your seller data to HMRC — so your numbers need to match. You report gross income, then deduct your allowable business expenses to arrive at your taxable profit.
What expenses can eBay sellers claim?
Stock costs, postage and packaging, final value fees, promoted listing fees, payment processing fees, returns and refunds, storage, mileage to the Post Office or suppliers, eBay Shop subscriptions, software, home office costs and accountancy fees. Read the full breakdown in our eBay seller expenses guide.
Do eBay sellers need to register for VAT?
If your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, you must register for VAT. This gets more complex when you are selling second-hand goods (where the VAT Margin Scheme may apply), shipping to international buyers, or using the Global Shipping Programme. We handle registration and submissions so you stay compliant without the stress.
Should I set up a limited company for my eBay business?
It depends on your profit level and personal circumstances. A limited company can be more tax-efficient once profits reach a certain threshold, but it brings additional admin and filing obligations. We will run the numbers and advise whether incorporation makes sense for where you are right now.
What is Making Tax Digital and does it affect me?
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax requires self-employed people with qualifying income over £50,000 to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC from April 2026. If your eBay income takes you over that threshold, it will apply. Visit our Making Tax Digital page for more, or book a call and we will confirm your position.
Is my information kept private?
Absolutely. We are bound by strict professional confidentiality rules and GDPR. Your financial information is stored securely in encrypted, cloud-based software. We will never share your data with anyone without your explicit permission.
