Do creators pay tax?

If you earn it,
HMRC wants to know.

If your creator income is more than £1,000 in a tax year, you usually need to register as self-employed and file a Self Assessment tax return.

If your taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in a rolling 12-month period, you must register for VAT. If your qualifying self-employed and property income is over £50,000, MTD for Income Tax may apply from 2026.

Creator tax questions, straight answers.

Quick answers before you book a call.

Do influencers and creators need to pay tax in the UK?
Yes. If you earn creator income with the intention of making a profit, HMRC usually treats it as taxable income. If you earn more than £1,000 in a tax year, you usually need to register for Self Assessment.
Do I need to declare gifted products?
Gifted PR can sometimes have tax implications, especially where there is an agreement to post or provide services in return. We help review the context and keep records clear.
What expenses can creators claim?
Common creator expenses can include equipment, software, props, lighting, internet, phone, editing tools, home studio costs, travel, subscriptions, accountancy fees and a business portion of relevant costs.
Do creators need to register for VAT?
You must register for VAT if taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in a rolling 12-month period, or if you expect it to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days.
Can you help with multiple income streams?
Yes. We work with creators who earn from brand deals, platform payouts, affiliate links, subscriptions, UGC retainers, donations, memberships and ad revenue.
Should I trade as a sole trader or limited company?
It depends on your profit, risk, privacy, admin tolerance and goals. Many creators start as sole traders and consider a limited company as income grows.
